Lake Shootout Outerlimits catamaran goes airborne in horrifying crash

Our thoughts and prayers are with Joel Begin and Mike Fiore for a speedy and full recovery.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — Less than an hour after racing began, tragedy struck the 2014 Shootout when a Outerlimits catamaran driven by Joel Begin and throttled by Mike Fiore crashed at the finish line.

It was only the sixth run of the day, at about 10:30 a.m. The water along the 34 Mile Marker was calm, with minimal winds. The run started well, but just as the brand-new Outerlimits approached the finish line at the end of the one-mile course, the bow began to lift dangerously high. Suddenly, the boat flew out of the water, flipping end-over-end, reaching an estimated 50 feet in the air.

The closed-canopy catamaran landed upside down, but somehow righted itself. The boat was clocked at 179 mph just before the crash.

Emergency personnel descended on the scene. Begin reportedly climbed out of the boat, but the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported he received serious injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital. However, Fiore's condition appeared to be more dire; an eyewitness reported he was in and out of consciousness. His helmet had reportedly flown off during the crash, and he had come out of his seat.

Fiore was airlifted to be treated at University Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

The course was shut down for nearly an hour, as the boat was towed to a nearby ramp, debris was removed from the water, and spilled fuel dissipated. The races then resumed, and there were no incidents for the rest of the day.

In its 26-years, the Shootout has been noteworthy for its high level of safety and lack of serious crashes. Saturday’s incident is the most serious the race has seen. Only one other serious crash has ever occurred.

Catamarans such as Begin’s Outerlimits gain their incredible speed by “packing” air between the two hulls. As the boat picks up speed, the air lifts it out of the water, allowing it to gain maximum velocity with minimal drag. However, a sudden gust of wind or other unpredictable factor can quickly lift the entire boat out of the water, spelling catastrophe.

The Outerlimits crash occurred directly after Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani attempted a new Shootout record in his 96 Spirit of Qatar catamaran—an attempt which was thwarted by a parachute malfunction. (Hassan later broke the record of 224 mph set by Bill Tomlinson in My Way in 2013; Hassan’s boat hit 244 mph.)

Joel Begin hails from Quebec, Canada and is no stranger to the Shootout, having won Top Gun in the Top Professional V class in 2012. He owns several businesses in Canada; he is married to Guylaine and they have three daughters.

Fiore is from Bristol, Rhode Island, and is the founder and owner of Outerlimits Powerboats. He has a wife, Shonda, and two children—Sophia and Jet.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS BIKEFEST 2014 IS THE BEST RIDE ON TWO WHEELS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: AUGUST 13, 2014
LAKE OF THE OZARKS BIKEFEST 2014 IS THE BEST RIDE ON TWO WHEELS

Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. -- For bikers, it's all about the ride - just being on the bike and taking in the scenery.  The beauty of the Lake of the Ozarks is why the yearly BikefestSeptember 11-14, annually draws 10,000 motorcycle enthusiasts to the Lake of the Ozarks.  But Bikefest also adds plenty of activities to ensure a weekend packed with enjoyment for motorcycle enthusiasts.

The event's official website -LakeBikefest.com - recommends three different rides around the area that take approximately 2-3 hours. Bennett Spring and Ha Ha Tonkastate parks are featured in an 84-mile ride, while a 96-mile ride around the Lake of the Ozarks shows riders a number of the area's most beautiful vistas.  A third ride of 115 miles includes roads that were part of historic Route 66 and features a stop at the historic community of Devil's Elbow on the Big Piney River.

The Lake area is a favorite destination for bikers year-round, not only for the breath-taking rides, but also because of the welcoming atmosphere, according to Bikefest organizers.  The area has more than 200 bars and restaurants, many of which offer entertainment and food specials just for Bikefest.  Added to that are vendors, events and activities brought in especially for the event, making for great times after the rides are through.

BikeFestRebels"The Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest is in its eighth year and it has grown to be the largest bike rally in the Midwest," Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Tim Jacobsen said.

"The Lake area's great rides are featured in the 2014 Official Bikefest Passport Ride, where stamps from 24 locations enter riders for a chance to win a brand new 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle.  It promises to be a great event, so we hope to see all motorcycle enthusiasts at the Lake September 11-14."

Music is also one of the draws for the event.  This year's headliners will be on stage at H. Toad's at Camden on the Lake Resort.  Friday night, Sept., 12, features performances from Nashville's Mustang Sally and Edge of Forever, a Lynard Skynard tribute band.  On Saturday, Hells/Bells takes to the stage with their tribute to AC/DC.  Live music can be found at a number of other venues around the Lake that weekend, as well.

Six vendor villages - at Lake of the Ozarks Harley Davidson ShopBagnell Dam Bait Shop and CampgroundDog Days Bar and GrillSurdyke Yamaha, the Toad Cove Compound at Camden on the Lake Resort, and Team Seebold Sports - will offer all types of motorcycle-related items.  Visitors can expect to see leathers, custom painting, lights and bike-builders.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, those in the market for a fresh set of wheels can bid on the bike (or bikes) of their choice at the second annual Big Bikefest Auction at Surdyke Yamaha. The auction is family-friendly and free to attend and runs from noon until 3 p.m., but the doors open at 9 a.m. for those that want to show up early to scope out the goods.

Riders who complete the Passport Program will be entered in a drawing to win a 2013 Harley Davidson FLD Switchback.

Attendees who want the opportunity to win a 2013 Harley Davidson FLD Dyna Switchback Motorcycle can participate in this year's Passport Program from 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11until 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14.  The program requires a visit to each of 24 locations to get a passport stamp.  Completed passports must be turned in by 11 a.m. at the official Passport Booth at Lake of the Ozarks Harley Davidson. The completed passports will then be entered into a drawing for the bike, to be awarded at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, at Lake of the Ozarks Harley Davidson.

On Sunday morning, Sept. 14, the Osage Beach First Assembly of God Churchwill be offering an outdoor tent service beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by a free lunch and bike blessing.
