Work Progressing on Hurricane Deck Bridge
CAMDEN COUNTY – The new Hurricane Deck Bridge on Route 5 in Camden County enters a new phase of construction the week of Dec. 17.
Crews have spent the last several months constructing concrete piers for the new bridge and next week will set steel girders on those concrete piers. The crews will place the girders for the new bridge from the water throughout the week.
“While the work taking place next week may not affect traffic, it is still a significant sign of progress on the project,” said Missouri Department of Transportation Resident Engineer John Sanders. “The girder placement will be a four-month process, and while we’ll start from the lake during the first week or two, we will need to close the existing bridge from time to time in January as work will need to be done from that structure. ”
Sanders noted that construction has been running smoothly and is progressing on schedule. The public can watch the bridge construction in progress via a time-lapsed camera located on the bridge that captures construction images every 10 to 15 minutes. The link can be found on MoDOT’s website under Major Projects at www.modot.org.
The new bridge is being built on the east side of the existing structure. It will be wider than the current bridge with two 12-foot driving lanes and seven-foot shoulders on each side. The existing bridge is open to traffic during the construction of the new structure, which will be completed in late 2013.
